History[]

7th Dragon 2020[]

Murakumo was originally a private organization that was established for monster extermination. Public knowledge about it was limited to urban legends, with the government keeping its details under wraps.

Through various license exams and recruitment methods (some of which were akin to forced abductions), the organization has gathered individuals with S Class potential to serve in its many unit divisions, ranging from structural engineering, research and development, genetic modification, among others.

The organization was led by Natsume Hikasa, a brilliant researcher who has dedicated her life to guiding talented individuals to reach their full potential. A month after the dragon invasion started in 2020, she reorganized Murakumo as a Dragon extermination group. Aside from their current mobilization division Unit 10, three of the surviving passers from the ill-fated 75th Induction Exam formed Unit 13, who would go on to become their "aces" in the war against the dragons.

However, Natsume started to question humanity's true potential midway through the conflict. To this end, she secretly developed a genetic augmentation code from 3 Emperor Dragon samples, which came to be known as the Dragon Chronicle. She vanished without a trace afterward, with her trusted aide Ayafumi Kirino taking over as temporary chairperson.

7th Dragon 2020-II[]

A year after the first dragon disaster, Murakumo assisted with repairs and rebuilding operations for the capital. Now that the dragons were extinct, the organization was mainly called on for severe monster attacks that the SDF could not handle on their own. Having suffered many losses, a handful of divisions were in the process of reorganizing, including Unit 10, whose members all perished the year before.

Kirino was still acting chairperson, but would later become incapacitated during the second dragon invasion. In his absence, the former U.S. Secretary Of Defense Emel took over.

As the aces of the organization, Unit 13 became a "last resort squadron" that was only called on to back up the SDF for monster attacks. As a result of gaps in activity, the current members lost their touch and could not fight as well as they did before. They would eventually get their groove back and once again become humanity's only hope against the dragons.

Etymology[]

The name "Murakumo" was derived from a sword in Japanese mythology called "Ame No Murakumo No Tsurugi" (天叢雲剣, "Heavenly Sword of Gathering Clouds") which was found from the remains of the slain serpent dragon Yamata No Orochi. It also symbolizes valor.
